At 10:28 am, Steve Jobs began to talk about Apple’s first transition from Motorolla 68000 Mac’s to the PowerPC based Mac’s, and then their second transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. After the brief trip down memory lane, the crowd quieted down as he began to talk about a third transition. A transition that was speculated for many years, but had never materialized… until now.

Steve Jobs, citing “Because we want to make the best computers for our customers” as the reason, announced the switch that Apple would be making in their PowerPC based line of personal computers to Intel x86 based computers. As everyone knows, this is a major architectual change, and it will break some programs. Steve claims that any program that was written properly could be easily ported to the new architecture with few headaches. To prove this point, at 10:40 am he invited Wolfram’s CEO onto the stage to showcase a ported version of Mathematica 5, quite possibly the most complex program available, running on the new Intel based Mac. Wolfram’s CEO was quoted saying that the port took “2 hours.” He claimed that only about twenty lines of code needed to be rewritten.

Well, as if that wasn’t enough, Steve also showcased Rosetta, a dynamic binary translator. Virtually transparent to users, and fast. Steve was able to show Microsoft Excel/Word running on the Intel based Mac without any porting and/or recompiling. To prove a point even further, he also showed Adobe Photoshop CS2 with all plugins running on the Intel based Mac without any significant speed decrease.

At approximately 11:00 am, Intel CEO Paul Otellini was welcomed onto the stage at the WWDC by Steve Jobs to talk about Apple’s transition to Intel chips. “The world’s most innovative computer company has teamed up with the most innovative chip company”, Otellini was noted saying.
