SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2005

After much wrangling between teams, tyre companies and the FIA, the United States Grand Prix has finally started... with just six cars in action.

As had been rumoured, the remaining 14 drivers, all running on Michelin tyres, peeled into the pits at the end of the formation lap, turned into their garages and switched off. Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi were thus left to contest the 73-lap event to a chorus of boos and jeers - and the occasional bottle - from the grandstands.

For the record, Michael Schumacher led Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello off the line, with Jordan's Tiago Monteiro initially occupying the final podium position.
