I just bought the DVD distro for the halibut. Didn't feel like downloading, my bandwidth is reserved for :spankit :faceboobs :nannas Ten dollah only! Anybody have any experience/comments about this OS? What is Solaris usually used for? Databases?

it's used for proprietary programs basically.
The only people that use it are ones that have programs that have been written for it purposefully.
It's used primarily to run databases or sometimes (mostly in the past) to run high end imagemaking machines.
nowadays it's specialty use only for the most part....
its kinda a unix like OS, with some quirks
very stable for the most part, and very good for single function machines.

We use Solaris for most of our NMS products...
I use my UltraSparc with Solaris as an to run scripts (crontab) and collect info from customers networks.
Very stable OS.

stable but slow... primarily used as a "enterprise unix"... which means clustering, load balancing, etc, etc... generally you'll find it running some form of application that involves oracle, cos both require deep pockets :nannas
