What are the odds?

2 Different Computer by 2 different Manufacturers both have hard drives crash..

Both computers were for my Dad too.. :comperror

Dell and a Sony VAIO both computers I got my Dad worked fine out of the box and then all of a sudden the hard drives crash and winblows won't load.. So now I am on the phone with Sony troubleshooting the VAIO and will probably have to have them send me a new hard drive..

Weird shit I tell ya.. Good thing both times they never really had any important data on it. The Sony just crashed on me today when I was using it.. I guess when the hard drive grinds and makes weird sounds when you shut it down, kinda means it's not going to start back up.. :laugh

Try loading the windows disk and doing windows recovery.... it may work

and if they were on the same network, the odds of this being a bug are pretty high...

When the computer starts hit F2 on the dell system and go into the bios........ see if the hard drive is showing up in there.... odds are it is.. and it's just windows that is not seeing it... but maybe not

...if it's making GRINDING NOISES it should just be considered dead.

Any chances these HDD's were the same manufacturer?

The DELL is fixed that happened awhile ago.. and it was the hard drive that failed

The Sony is what did it today, and I reset the BIOS and even tried safe mode and it failed..

It's cool they are coming out to replace the hard drive it's the hard drive that failed..

It sounds like you don't have any important data you need off of it, but if you do, I'd suggest popping the hard drive out, and getting a 2.5" external hard disk reader. It will hook up via USB to another computer, and often you can recover some data off of it.

ya nothing on it.. My dad bought it to travel with and never used it.. I guess he didn't like Vista too much.. So I started to throw some stuff on it that I liked like Firefox and some other programs and then it crapped out on me so it won't be hard to get it back up once i get the new harddrive

laptop harddrives are more prone to failure that desktop drives
why?
because what kills a hard drive is spin up/spin down.

and laptops usually have power saving that turns off the hard drives all the time when they are idle.

turn that shit off

Honestly, the Toshiba power management is quite good, my laptop is pretty much on 24/7 for more than 2 years now... never had a problem... yet. :

About HD reliability, tell you the truth, all these years I had more desktop HD failures than laptop ones... :comperror

my sony vaio is over 4 years old now and had a few repairs on it. IE. FAN and Battery. Other than that every thing has been golden. I have it on almost 24/7 for 4 years.
