Need help with vista sound driver on dell laptop

I installed Vista ultimate on my wife's Dell 700m and it worked great until a stupid update wiped out the sound. I was unable to roll back to a working set up so I tried reinstalling, nothing.. I've tried uninstalling the drivers, updating the drivers, installing different drivers.. nothing.. does anyone have any ideas? Or should I just go back to xp?

btw I like vista I have it on my work and media machines but for some reason that poor little laptop doesn't get along with it. And I'm admittedly not the greatest at this tech support business.

Are there any errors when you install the updated drivers, or just no sound coming out?

If an error, make sure you are using Vista drivers.
Some for that laptops sound chip can be found here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utiliti...io-driver.html

If there is no sound, but no error messages, go to control panel, make sure it's in classic view, and click on sound.
What is listed where it says "select a playback device"? does it say something like speakers, or something about digital high def.
If their is a speaker line, and a digital line, make sure speakers are set to default.

Dell only has XP drivers posted, since the laptop wasn't offered with Vista. Thats why I posted the link above
