Question about features/protection of documents

Ok, is there any real way to protect documents from (after being downloaded) being printed/saved to disk and distributed? Obviously, copyrights can be worked around easily, just look at file sharing. But, just as a first line of defense.... Let's say you had a book online or something similar, and you wanted to offer that for sale. Upon payment, the user could download the book, and view their on their computer. Are there any formats that would prevent (initially) this file from being printed off or the download link from being shared?

I've seen winrar files where you have to enter a code in every time to access items, but beyond that I don't know...

Well, there isn't really a way to do this. You can save a document to PDF, which will prevent someone from being able to edit it (unless they recreate it word for word), but they will be able to print it and share it as much as they like.
Putting passwords on a file is the best most of us can do.
You are basically looking for DRM (digital rights management) software, which 90% of the public hates, because generally, companies use it to treat their customers like criminals.
Example being I buy a movie, like 300, on bluray. This is great, but I'd like to be able to rip it onto my media center so I can watch it without having to put the disk in, or I'd like to be able to watch it on my iPod. The DRM schemes won't let you do this, they want you to buy several copies of the same movie, one for each intended use.

Anyway, thats getting off topic, but you are looking for DRM it sounds like. There are many schemes out there. All of them a pain in the ass. Some will stop the average soccer mom from printing or sharing a file, but there is no DRM out that hasn't been cracked.
