laptop for wife, need to buy

wife is starting school (again) this winter. She needs a laptop with the basics.... Microsoft office (I have a bootleg copy), wireless access and stuff...nothing too major

What do you all think? Any good recommendations? Also, I'm thinking about going with XP as well, since she is used to it

Most lower end laptops I see range from $400 to $600

If all you're really looking for is something for office programs and email/internet, you don't need anything fancy at all. Pretty much any low-end model on the market today should serve you well. Dell has some pretty awesome deals that go by fairly regularly -- I see some crossing slickdeals.net just about weekly. If you really want to brave the slobbering fools that work at places like Best Buy, they should have at least a few to choose from with what you're looking for. Hell, even Wal-Mart has been carrying some not-too-bad machines for quite a while.

Anyway...Dell, Compaq and Sony are laptop brands that I've had somewhat recent experience with and have been good to me. Personally, I own a Sony Vaio I've had for about 4 years now and I've never had a single problem.

There's a ton of them out there right now for under $500. Just tigerdirect for example has 33 models in that price range.

I've been looking into this as well...

First laptop for me, been a custom desktop builder for a while..

I'm looking for something similar, mainly using it for wireless capabilities and watching movies, but also mainly for prorgramming and class related stuff, don't have any needs for games..

Trying to keep it under 800$..

What I'd look for:

CPU: Look for Core2Duo or Centrino Duo. Stay away from anything Celeron, P4M. AMD Turion X2 chips are good too, but not as good battery life or overall performance as a core2duo.

RAM: 1gig or more

Video: Anything Intel Integrated will give longest battery life and plenty of performance for work or movies. ATI or Nvidia graphics are much more powerful (for games), but eat battery quicker.

Hard drive: 120 gig min.

Any laptop with above specs will have wireless and a dvd burner these days.
