Considering an SLR

So being married and having kids has tought me that for every occasion, season, activity, etc... there is a package of pictures to buy! Fall pictures, winter pictures, spring pictures, cheerleading pictures, basketball pictures, football pictures, gymnastics pictures, christmas pictures........ so on and so on and so forth.... Quite frankly, I feel like I'm being nickle and dimed and ripped off. By the time the year is up we could have bought a really nice camera and taken the damn things ourselves.

So I'm thinkin... tax return time soon... wife's B-Day soon... hrm....

Here's the 2 I'm looking at so far:
Rebel XT
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._Rebel_XT.html

and
Rebel XTi
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...#goto_itemInfo

I'm very new to this kind of thing so I don't really know the differences between the two other than the megapixel difference. So I don't know if one is worth the extra $130. And I don't even know if I'd really be able to tell the difference between 8 and 10.1 MP.

Basically this camera will be used to take picutres of kids various activities... family type stuff... ya know... most of the kind of thing where you piss away money buying a package of picuters that you're gonna use about half of from some Joe-Blow photographer studio. I'm sure I'll take some of them playing sports and maybe a sporting event here and there. I want to have something with decent quality, but I don't necissarily need to be able to count the stiches on a football while it's in mid-air if ya know what I mean.

Suggestions?

Note: I'm not totally stuck on Canon.. I've just always heard good things about them and my buddy has a nice lens for his EOS 35mm that I can probably ninja from time to time.

Be careful when you buy cameras online you will all of a sudden get a sales call from a guy trying to upsell you on either the next model, a warranty, or some other bullshit they want to push on you.. The reason they are able to sell these cameras for cheap is they push like mad these shitty extras you DO NOT NEED...

After Saying that.. I have the Canon 20D and I love it, some other nice DSLR's that are out are the Nikon and Olympus but they are about the same price..

Olympus E-510
Nikon D40

i'd say XT if you're looking @ either of those.

XTi isn't a big step up. only thing i know of is the mpx diff. and that in itself isn't worth the price of admission. save the $ for lenses.

go 20D or 5D if you're going to a higher end canon DSLR.

sounds like you're looking more towards the action side of shooting, in that case, the canon wins hands down. nikon is good for people/low light/landscape shots. canon wins for action/sports

20D is old school now....

30D is out (with a full-size sensor) and the 40D is on the way. :

I'm trading up as soon as the 40D hits the market.

I have a Nikon D70S I will sell you cheap.. it's about 1.5 years old and in perfect working order.

I upgraded so I have no need for two camera's, I thought my wife would use the D70 but she still won't touch it... lol
