That last slo-mo scene shows he must have cut it loose and deployed a back up chute. But still the initial shock of getting sucked backwards out of a plane would scare the piss out of you. I've been skydiving before, and it's enough of a rush when you're expecting it....that dude's lucky he thought clearly enough not to panic.

he probably just unclipped it. no reason to cut it loose when you can pull your rings and detach it.

he would have a reserve shoot and go off that, but procedure would be to open reserve soon as possible that way if you have a problem you open up and fall as slowly as possible and wait for an experienced guy to link up with you and hook up. notice the other guys went out soon after him...any more problems they should be able to link up in the air. but he would have a reserve on for sure...

That's what I meant by cut it loose. I didn't mean he actually cut it with a knife or something...

That chute would be useless anyways though...did you see how torn and ragged it was looking when the camera got a shot of it as he fell away?

I see...

I know he will probably get linked up by another person... but what if he doesn't? Is it true that the backup chute would have a very rough/hard landing if he has to land with that?

As far as I know, the back up shute is no different than the main, so I don't see why it would be any rougher of a landing. I would just hate to have to go to the reserve, because if anything goes wrong with that, most likely you are going to die. I'm going to be doing my first dive this spring. :badg

Really? Cause people told me the backup chute is a smaller chute... maybe they've changed throught the years with newer type of chutes...

I will do my first jump this spring too... :badg

backup chutes are smaller. you do land harder, but it's not THAT bad. can still do it safely. you would want to do a backup landing before hooking up w/ someone else. that would be a last resort. hooking up w/ someone else is tricky because if they come in too fat and whack you or something you're both in deep shit
