Shoe found in search for croc attack 'victim'

POLICE have found a second sandal belonging to a man they suspect was taken by a crocodile in far north Queensland.
Arthur Booker, 62, from Logan, south of Brisbane, has not been seen since he went to check a crab pot at the Endeavour River Escape campsite near Cooktown, north of Cairns, about 8.30am (AEST) yesterday.
The Vietnam veteran and his wife Doris were on a two-day holiday at the campsite.
Mr Booker was reportedly retrieving his pots on foot because he had packed his eight-foot dinghy on the roof rack of his vehicle ready to leave the site.
Cairns Police District Inspector Ian Swan told AAP that a second sandal belonging to Mr Booker had been found 400 metres upstream.
Mr Booker's wristwatch was also found earlier.
The only other clues to his disappearance were a camera left on the bank, the track marks of a crocodile and a snapped crab pot line.
Insp Swan said 15 people were continuing the search for Mr Booker and would continue tomorrow if nothing eventuated today.
"At this stage we've got no concrete evidence to support a crocodile was involved but there are crocodiles in that reach of the river," Insp Swan said.
Mrs Booker has been admitted to Cooktown hospital for observation after being deeply distressed over the incident. Her sister Carmen Watson has flown to Cooktown, and outside the hospital today urged the media to respect the family's privacy.
Last night the Endeavour River Escape campsite's Terry Rayner identified a six metre crocodile named Charlie as the key suspect.
"He lives there. That's his territory. He's the alpha male there," Mr Rayner said.
But Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service regional manager James Newman today told ABC Radio that two other large crocodiles were spotted in the area and search crews were exercising caution.
"They will be looking in the water today and having a look at the bottom to see if they can't pull anything off the bottom," Mr Newman said.
The University of Queensland's crocodile expert Craig Franklin said crocodiles were ambush predators on the lookout for repeated patterns of activity from potential prey.
"They don't target humans. They're opportunistic feeders," Professor Franklin told AAP.
"If a food source presents itself then they see that as fair game.
"It could be a pig or a wallaby, but if that animal repeatedly goes down to a similar location, they will ambush it."
Owner of Cooktown's The Lure Shop, Russell Bowman, said Mr Booker had made the fatal mistake of returning to the same location twice, having set his crab pot and returning to retrieve it.
"We've all seen the documentaries where there's those lightning-fast takes out of the water," Mr Bowman said.
"It's one of the basic rules you apply, don't form habits.
"If you're camping on a water hole you try not to go back to the same place repeatedly.
"It's a tragedy, but when you go into crocodile country you really have to have your wits about you so you don't put yourself in a vulnerable position."
The last fatal crocodile attack in Queensland was in August 2005 at Lakefield National Park in Cape York. Fisherman Barry Jefferies was killed when a crocodile grabbed his arm and pulled him from a canoe.

The women that might be impressed by that stuff are the ones you donīt want to have anything to do with anyway...

I liked the guy cutting the tree, having done the same for years. Not getting blasted like him, just cutting trees.
