Story:
Celebrations at the University of Minnesota Spring Jam Festival got dangerously out of hand Saturday night.
Minneapolis Police and the U of M Police responded around 8:00 to a large party near the University that had gotten out of control on the 1400 block of 7th Street SE.
Arriving on the scene officers were met with bottles, rocks and other pieces of debris being thrown at them.
Police had to pull back and reorganize with more officers before they could disperse the crowd.
Tear gas and foam rounds were used to aid the police against the crowd which grew to almost 500 people throughout the night.
Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jessie Garcia says it was a case of drunken college students who had taken advantage of a good situation that was presented to them.
Students caused property damage in the area by jumping on cars, trying to tip over vehicles and starting a large fire in the street.
Extra police officers were dedicated to the Spring Jam this weekend, but by the end of the night's mayhem, almost 60 officers were responding to the incidents in Dinkytown.
So far six people have been arrested.
No serious injuries have been reported.
