Camp dog cull

Australia : NT : Alice Springs

Camp dog cull postponed

A cull of camp dogs due to start on Monday at Borroloola in the Northern Territory has been postponed.

The Member for Barkly, Elliott McAdam, has called for the local council to consider advice from a group that specialises in animal management in remote Indigenous communities.

If the cull goes ahead, owners of unregistered dogs will be given the option of paying a $50 fine or having the dog put down.

Jeff Colver, from the Borroloola Council, says he will be happy to inform the group of the health risk posed by the 700-odd dogs in the community.

"So many dogs wandering the streets barking all night, attacking people, pulling children off bikes and chasing cars as well as their diseased state," he said.

"The council's got an obligation, it has the by-laws there, it's had the by-laws in place for 13 or 14 years and for us not to carry out the actions required is a failure on our duty of care."
