New after-hours job ?

As you all know I've been messing around with Photoshop and web design for a while.

So I did the odd job here and there to help out friends... Design some posters, flyers, web graphics...

Now because of word of mouth, more and more people are starting to come to me to desing commercial stuff for them...

So I'm thinking should I start up a one man business to create artwork after hours ? I'm doing it anyway, and they're making money off it, so I might as well charge them a fee, no ?

PS: No Corey, I won't charge you a dime since I din't pay you rent to live on this forum :

Sigs are also still free :

What do you think ? Should I go for it ? As I see it there's no risk. If there's no work, I have my day job, and if there is work, I get paid for messing around with Photoshop, which I happen to like...

The only downside I can see is how much time will it take away from being with your family? As long as you can control the hours you put in so that it doesn't put a strain on them, then I'd say go for it man. Working from home doing something you already do for fun is a win-win situation. I remember that billiards one you posted a while back. You've already got a knack for design, so run with it man...

yer, try and work out how many hours you want to invest into it... if i'm doing contracting work on top of my regular work, i tend to set a saturday or sunday aside and treat it like a normal working day... that way i still get time during the week with my missus, rather than being in front of the pc all week

but, shit yeah, go for it... a few extra bucks doing something you enjoy is a good thing

prejudices are what fools use for reason

"After-hours"... I thought you were talking about being a manwhore... :1poke :

Ok seriously, yeah if you can manage your time, then go for it... there is big money in there... plus if you enjoy doing that stuff, that's even better...

There is big money, but also a lot of frustration.....

kinda like photography for people.....

"can you do this?"
"how about this"
"now let's try this"

.
keep that in mind as people suck when it somes to design work if they don't really have a good idea of what they want.

and as others have stated....
Plan it out. I'm single, so my "other" time is still all mine.
If you have a family, you need to make sure you are not spending too much time "working" versus being with the family.

Ok that's true... it's frustrating when you get a client like that or when you get a picky client like me where you'll be working your ass off to make everything perfect... :

Well, I may be a perfectionist, but I don't complain about stupid sh!t like that nor give people a hard time...

But when it comes to graphic or web design, I'm like Belgium, I'll notice the very small glitchs or details... and I'll always try to fix it... you have no idea how many times I edited my current sig on the first week where most people won't even noticed what have changed... :comperror

In the meanwhile I have my first assignment...

Will be distributed in all BMW and Honda dealers and 2 national motorcycle magazines

Won't make much off this, but it gives me a chance to get great exposure for future work !

PS: I'll probably get a set of tires out of it :
