I don't believe it. There has got to be multiple warnings that tell you that your landing gear isn't down. I'm not a pilot, but I know lots of people that are, and this has come up in coversation.

Unless they were sleeping, then maybe....

There is probably more to it, but never let the facts get in the way of a good story..... :

That is just a sad site. There are anti collision warnings that go off when the landing gear is up. The only thing I could think of is pilot fatigue.

actually, there are NO warnings that the gear isn't down, believe it or not.

at NAS Lemoore (hornet station in central cali), we used to stand "gear watch". we sat in a booth at the end of the runway, and called the tower if a bird was coming in gear-up. i made three calls in a three year period.

when ATC (air traffic control) clears an aircraft to land, they make a call "check gear down" before giving clearance. either they didn't hear the call or the tower didn't make one.

there are no indicators on the aircraft that tell the pilot to lower the gear except for the pilot checklist....which every good crew will use to prepare for takeoffs and landings. they will get a "barber pole" showing all three mounts are down and locked, and will have to begin troubleshooting if any one of them doesn't show locked.

so....either there was a MASSIVE breakdown in tower comms, cockpit comms AND crew situational awareness....which COULD have happened after an 11 hour ferry flight....

or they simply had a gear failure and this site is bullshit.

belly landings HAVE happened due to forgetfulness...
