Keyless auto entry over cell phone? (anyone heard of this?)

Today a friend in school told me this.

you lock your keys in the car so you call home and have someone hold your extra set close to the phone and press the keyless entry button and you hold your phone close to the car and it will unlock.

I thought these all worked over IR (isn't htat what those little black domes on our dash?) but this kid swears he heard it and tried it with his scion and it worked.

would be cool if it worked.

I know some are IR, 'cause one of my Dad's old cars was.

My wife's car, on the other hand, is not. I can unlock it with the keyfob still in my pocket. I'm gonna have to try this tonight -- she's out of town and is supposed to be calling me later.

some are RF transmitters, which would still not work over a telephone

some merely have RFID tags in the keyfopb (i think corvettes are this way) where the car sends a signal and when the properly coded rfid tag is in range it responds and the car unlocks itself.

Yeah, RKE's are in the 300mhz range. Cell phones are in the 800mhz range. Beside, you cant re-transmit an RF sig thru another transmitter.

I had a couple of guys at work say that they have done this, I've tried it and it didn't work with mine.

I'm sure it depends on a lot of things... a friend of mine got it to work on her ford van... I haven't tried it on my Tundra tho.
