we are in a quagmire, honestly, by staying we are really spinning our wheels, and if we pull out it will be a disaster. Better to fight them on their soil, than have them come over here.......or do you all think that isn't possible?

I believe it is not only possible, but also imminent. However, we as lazy Americans will go about our lives, and forget about the threat. We will relax our security, and sometime in 2010 or 2015.....they will unleash something on us.

Just speculation from me, but if you think they will "live and let live" because we are halfway across the world you are sadly mistaken.

Yup. This is a TRUE Statement. It is going to be interesting, we know Bush will stay the course, so the next president will be tasked with coming up with a drawdown policy. Once he or *gasp* she starts pulling the troops out, the violence will probaby double or triple, and then it will be interesting to see how we address the situation. Like you said R1Lover, it is going to happen regardless. However, let us not forget another reason we are there.......it isn't about freedom, or policy, or whatever you call it. Quite frankly it is about protecting our own interests as a country. $10 per gallon gasoline anyone? Well, it might happen (I'm just speculating) if we let that country go to shit and leave nobody at the helm. Let us not forget about:

not to mention the whole "terrorism" thing I mentioned in my other post. Here is the bottom line, and what I know to be true. Things will NEVER go back to being the way they were. Impossible. Obviously there is a mess over there, but some people say we should just leave, and magically we'll go back to the way things were. It won't happen, and even though we say "fuck them, let them kill themselves, it isn't our problem", it WILL be our problem when they come over here to kill us. Regardless of the past, we have quite a road ahead of us to travel. I'm not sure how it will end, but I do know there is NO RIGHT ANSWER. I don't see leaving 150,000 troops over there indefinitely as the answer either. *sigh*

Say what you will about Nader but if he or someone like him where in power we would have never invaded Iraq.

The oil is not worth the cost of lives. You may have to get used to riding your push bike to work or move closer.

Easy for everyone to say what should have happened. How about blessing us wth a plan going forward? The past is the past, nobody could have imagined it would have turned into the quagmire that it has.

I ask you again, would you rather our brave troops be fighting them over THERE, or maybe you'd rather have marshal law in your city because a suicide bomber just blew himself up in your local mall? I don't have the answer, but what do you propose Mr Armchair quarterback?

You said nobody? I recall a lot of people saying it would turn out like it has. Did you read the link????. Well it clearly says otherwise

Officials inside and retired generals, diplomats and intelligence specialists outside the Bush government have warned before and after the Iraq invasion of the disastrous consequences of this maneuver. Inside the Pentagon, the U.S. Army personnel, up to four-star Generals, have warned against the invasion but have been muzzled.

Bush’s own CIA director—Porter J. Goss—, General William Casey and others declared that the U.S. military presence was fueling the insurgency in Iraq and Goss added that our presence in Iraq is a magnet attracting more people from other countries to learn the skills of sabotage and terror.

Bush’s own counter-terrorism advisor in the White House, Richard Clarke, wrote in his book, Against All Enemies, that Osama bin Laden must be beseeching Bush to invade Iraq to inflame the Muslim world and generate new recruits.

Nothing—facts, judgment, the destruction of Iraq, the U.S. casualties, the massive drain on the taxpayers, the distraction from the needs of the American people affect this obsessively-compulsed duo in the White House.

Instead of copying and pasting, how about you respond to my questions? Or have you no ideas of your own? I agree there was some resistance to the invasion, and I also agree "nobody" was a bit overstated.

Plan forward? Its been said so many times before its almost deafening. Bring the brave men and woman home now, not next year but now. That would be a huge step forward.

Ok, now that you have probably said the most overly general statement on this entire forum, how do you think we should go about that? I too wish the troops, every single one of them, could be home by Christmas. However, given all the things we have been discussing, it is either impossible or very hard to do. WITHOUT copying and pasting some article, how do you propose we get this done?

where are the personal insults? Actually, this discussion is a lot more respectful than you'll find other places.

sorry wasn't meaning to pick on Budha. For what it's worth I don't like Nader either, but I believe in democracy and freedom of speach/opinion. somebody can vote for Adolf Hitlers skeleton if they want and I'm not gonna stop them, I'll disagree, but hey man, they've got the right to support and vote for whoever they think is the best candidate, and it's not my place to tell somebody what to think.
