Home filing/organization?

We've moved around for the last 8 or 9 years, always keeping stuff in little portable file boxes or just in folders etc...

Now that we are in a house I'm trying to organize the office, went out and got some filing cabinets and book shelves... I THOUGHT I could do this in an afternoon

#1: You dont realize just how much CRAP you haul around for no apparent reason. I have a shred pile next to my desk now of useless paperwork that is long expired. Been hauling it around for no reason.

#2: Organizing this shit is tougher than I thought! Once complete it should be nice and organized though. Better than sifting through boxes for something you might need.

#3: My how life has changed. Weekends used to be exclusively for riding. I find myself going to home depot and walmart now, putting furniture together and other crap

I guess I should have mentioned, other then tax information needed, I shred everything as soon as I pay the bill. With everything being available online these days there is really no need to keep these items anymore.

It makes for a much cleaner office.

the sad thing is, even knowing this, you still look at those old statements from that car you sold like 5 years ago and think "maybe I should keep these just in case..."

LMAO ya that's exactly it.

"well what if I need it someday?"

and the actual answer to that is: "you'll never be able to find it...."

I know what you mean phil. When we moved to a much larger shop I figured could move our inventory in one FULL day. Little did I know it would be a 4 day process of constantly hauling shit with 3 people. you look at things and think it will be a quick job then you get a few hours into it and wish you never started or would have assumed it would take longer so it wouldn't be such a mind fuck.

just moved last weekend

everything i own: fit into a 6 x 10 trailer and one pickup (bikes), 1 trip

everything she owns: took three trips with an 18' enclosed trailer, and seven pickup truck beds. she had so many clothes, she had to start filling my daughter's bedroom closet.

give it to goodwill and take the tax deduction

oh and i cheat.

The software program i sell and support has a built in paperless filing system.

i take my shit to work, scan it, and then shred it.

file it away and put the pdf's onto dvd's.

no file cabinets needed.
