MOTOGP News : Hopkins makes fast start in Qatar.
Team Suzuki MotoGP completed its first day of the Qatar test on Sunday with John Hopkins and Chris Vermeulen getting through a large amount of good work on their new GSV-Rs.
Hopkins completed a total of 60 laps and recorded a quickest time of 1min 58.87secs – almost a second quicker than his fastest race lap in 2005. The Anglo-American star completed a thorough test of the latest generation of Bridgestone race tyres, including a significant evaluation of the new front compounds and constructions.
Rookie team-mate Vermeulen ended the first day with 67 laps under his belt and a fastest time of 2mins 0.65secs. The Australian was able to test many chassis settings and options on the new GSV-R as the dusty nature of the Qatar track improved throughout the day.
Also present on track were Tech 3 Yamaha riders James Ellison, Carlos Checa, Ducati test rider Shinichi Itoh and Kawasaki test rider Olivier Jacque. Camel Yamaha team-mates Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards will start testing at Qatar from Monday.
