Late Melandri fastest in Germany.

Marco Melandri may have recently discovered that he's been riding with a broken collarbone for the past two races, but he still took day one glory in Germany with a late fast lap at the Sachsenring.

With this morning's opening practice session, led by Kenny Roberts Jr, having taken place on a drying track it took just seven minutes for MotoGP World Championship leader Nicky Hayden to beat the KR211V's FP1 best.

Hayden then continued to lead the hour-long session right until the 40-minute mark, when Repsol Honda team-mate Dani Pedrosa moved ahead. The Donington Park winner remained in charge right until the dying seconds, when Fortuna Honda rider Melandri suddenly pulled an unexpectedly large 0.341secs advantage over Pedrosa.

Ducati Marlboro's Loris Capirossi, injured in the same Catalunya accident as Melandri, finished the day just 0.004secs from Dani, with Hayden settling for fourth - but just 0.035secs from the #65.

why would he need an excuse? He's right there with the top guys. 1 sec covers the top 12. Marco put in a very fast lap at the end of the session but everybody else from 2nd to 10th is covered by 0.5 sec.

man you guys see those 250's running around the track? those spanny's have the tamest horn coefficient I have ever seen, seriosly setting those bikes up for broad, tame power. I've seriosly never seen pipes set-up that mellow before.

hes not very fast in practice but when it comes to race time he's on. He reads each rider and picks them off one by one.

ya that's exactly it, I've heard alot of guys say "he's just so good he can leave whenever he wants, doesn't bother going early, waits till the end" I say "BS" the reason he doesn't go early is 'cause he can't, he reads them and learns from them, then goes, he's the best there is at that, and the last guy... no reason to risk him reversing it on you if you aren't 100% that you can check out and go, hence the many last lap maneuvers of Vale.

Ya, I know but it would be good to see him back on form. With all the basis covered.
