Return of Biatchi! (maybe)

Formula 1 engine guru Mario Illien has turned his hand to world motorcycle racing, funding and designing a V4 MotoGP bike which is expected to make its race debut later this year.

One of the founders of Ilmor Engineering, which designed and built McLaren’s Mercedes-badged Formula 1 engines for many years, Illien has long been one of F1’s most respected engineers.

He has timed his entry into MotoGP to coincide with the introduction of a new 800cc engine formula in 2007.

But Motorcycle News reports that the bike will be raced in the final two rounds of this year’s world championship at Estoril and Valencia.

Chassis designer Eskil Suter shook down the bike, which was built in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, at a Silverstone track day last week.

Illien has spent between £3m and £5m of his own money on the project and is planning to field a two-man team in MotoGP next year.

Ilmor’s long-time rival Cosworth made an unsuccessful foray into MotoGP when it supplied Aprilia in 2002-04 – but Illien is confident he has not repeated those mistakes.

“Other teams have mistakenly used too much F1 technology on their bikes, like Team Roberts, Aprilia and KTM,” he told MCN.

“We haven’t.

“We know that a successful four-stroke bike engine is all about driveability and bottom-end power.

“On most tracks riders are only at full throttle for 10-15 percent of the lap.”

Among the riders being linked with the project is Max Biaggi, who tested a Midland F1 car over the winter but is seeking a way back into the MotoGP ranks after being dropped by Honda.

whether or not you guys dislike him or not, he belongs there. He has proven over the years he's one of the best. He was top 5 last year. He would have been up there again this year. You gotta give him credit regardless he deserves it.

Biaggi was leading Hayden until he was asked to not return tho, he was in line for yet another #2 in the championship.

hard to say how it would have gone down tho if he hadn'ta pissed off Erv.

HAIL TO THE KING!!

Its the truth....Biaggi deserves to be in motogp. Especially wayyyyyyyyyyy more than james ellison on his tech 3 yamaha. Biaggi should just hop on that team. Seems like a decent bike.

Max is better than Ellison on pure talent, but his attitude/personality is a huge turn off for alot of people.

He was/is a good rider, but I seriously doubt he'll make it back into MotoGP. Honda has VERY strong influence.
