Camel Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi returned from the summer break to record the fastest lap of the day after leading most of the afternoon practice session for Sunday’s Czech Grand Prix at Brno in the Czech Republic.

Rossi, who was second fastest to Repsol Honda’s Nicky Hayden in the morning session, jumped to the top of the time charts in the seventh minute. He briefly lost the lead, then regained it in minute 15 and held it for the rest of the hour. He ended the day as the only rider in the 57’s with a best of 1:57.871.

Kawasaki’s Randy de Puniet was a surprise second, 0.157 seconds slower than Rossi and the first of the Bridgestone riders. His best was a 1:58.028.

Marlboro Ducati’s Loris Capirossi was third, also on Bridgestones, and .442 secs. back of de Puniet.

Colin Edwards, Rossi’s teammate, was fourth fastest, and the first of the Americans, after knocking 1.2 secs off his morning time.

Team Roberts’ Kenny Roberts Jr. was fifth at a gap of .268 to Edwards, and at the front of a very tight seven-rider pack. Only .287 secs. covered Roberts Jr. to Rizla Suzuki’s John Hopkins in 11th.

In between came Kawasaki’s Shinya Nakano, Tech 3 Yamaha’s Carlos Checa; the first Dunlop rider, Dani Pedrosa; on the first of the Repsol Hondas, Fortuna Honda’s Marco Melandri, and Repsol Honda’s Nicky Hayden.

Hayden led morning practice with a lap of 1:59.387, but was the only rider in the top 12 who didn’t improve his time in the afternoon.

Brno is the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship and the first since the July 23 Red Bull U.S. GP at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Hmmmmm... wonder if Honda had Hayden on the test bike for the 2nd session...? You wouldn't think they'd be screwing around with the championship on the line - but it's interesting that he didn't improve on what a lot of people call a "true riders track." Maybe he's learning that art of Rossi-ing (sandbagging)

from the fead they had this morning it looked like Rossi had two goes at a qualifier and then went back to race tires. He did a 1.57 and immediately went back to the pits and the next run put in a 1.58 flat and again right back into the pits. Randy did pretty much the same and Loris and Colin also. Everybody was running 1.59s with the exeption of these four laps.

Qualifying tyre puts Rossi on top.

A qualifying tyre put Valentino Rossi at the top of the timesheets after two free practice sessions for Sunday's Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno.

The Italian's best Friday lap time was just outside Sete Gibernau's pole from last year and signalled a welcome return to form for the five-times MotoGP world champion, who is currently 51-points behind championship leader Nicky Hayden after retiring from the previous round in the USA with mechanical troubles - marking his third DNF of the season.

"I am happy, it is a good day because this year has been difficult so far, especially during practice when we have often struggled and started races from behind, but today I was second in FP1 and first in FP2," said Rossi. "We have some new settings for the suspension, to help the tyres work properly, and I am happy.

"We also tried a qualifying tyre today, in order to give us more of an idea about what we need to adjust tomorrow in the afternoon session in order to challenge for a place at the front of the grid. This is really why I am in first place but anyway the race setting is also good and I was second fastest in the morning practice too so we know we have the pace. Tomorrow we need to continue working like this.

For sure it has been a difficult season. We have had a lot of problems since the beginning and we worked very hard on the bike and with the tyres but we've still struggled a lot. We have also had a lot of bad luck - breaking the engine, breaking the tyres - which lost us a lot of points. We want to do better in the final six races and we're moving in the right direction.

"We are searching for the 'key' because I have been able to win four races, more than any other rider, but at other tracks we have been in trouble. We hope we can find the key here," he concluded.

"It was a good start to the weekend and just what we were looking for after the engineers worked so hard during the summer," added team director Davide Brivio. "This is only the first day and we all know the important thing is to continue like this and make sure we are prepared for qualifying and the race but it is nice to have such good result so early in the weekend."

yea none of the repsol boys put on qualifiers, several other riders did, but nickys pace still wasnt very good in the second session, like someone else said wonder what they were trying, you dont always go forward when you try new things hopefully they got some good data for tommorow.

it looks like rossi best on a race tire was a 59.2, danni, and nakano both did similiar times on race tires, rossi's average lap was deff the best of anyone buy a few tenths

No , sorry. But then again , I guess if I were you guys , I'd hurry up and talk trash while Rossi's bike was still runnin' too. He can qualify on Pole from here on out and start from the front of the grid for every race and that STILL don't mean his bike or tires will hold together

I guess it's exciting for you guys every race regardless of how fast or slow he's runnin , just to see if he'll finish :jimmie

I think Pedrosa is gonna win this one.
