MotoGP Spies: The Ducati and Yamaha rumours.

MotoGP Spies: The Ducati and Yamaha rumours.

Saturday, 21st June 2008

As Ben Spies continues to impress on his MotoGP debut, rumours continue regarding a 2009 ride.

By Mike Nicks

Within ten seconds of Ben Spies walking out of the Rizla Suzuki pitbox to hold a brief open-air press conference, I thought: MotoGP and this guy are a perfect match.

The double AMA Superbike champion is only 23, but Spies has the kind of authoritative demeanour and deep Marlboro-man voice - but without the charred lungs and the impotence - that makes women tremble and journalists listen.

"If I want to be over here I have to be over here as soon as I can," Spies intoned. "I am trying to get here for sure."

It's generally assumed that Spies, who has gained his American success with Suzuki, would automatically slot into the Rizla Suzuki grand prix team if he came to Europe. But that's not necessarily the case.

His management team is in discussion with Marlboro Ducati, and interest from Yamaha is also rumoured, as well as contact with Francis Batta's Alstare Suzuki World Superbike team.

But the way Spies is handling the GSVR800 at Donington this weekend, anything other than an express route into MotoGP would seem to be a waste of his talent.

or Jorge's given how that's going.

They're not wrong tho, he's got an authorative personality, you can see it in his riding style too. Just tosses it in and says "you're going to stick." and it does, LOL.

I think China really messed up JL.

At full health he is going to be hard to compete against.

Vale don't presume I'm jumping on the JL , cause I'm not

at full mental health sure, but keep in mind that he was already over 100% mental health and I doubt he'll ever get back to that level.

Reality came up and bit him in both ankles and the head and the hand all in close succession.

don't even try to compare JL to Doohan.

you and I both know that Doohan had 100x the grit.

I certainly wouldn't count any of those guys out... I'm sure Jorge has been hurt quite a bit in the past... this won't slow him down IMO.

well... Lawson and Doohan said it and I believe it, lots of guys can be fast on a 500 right out of the trap, but the go down hard once, twice, thrice, and it's years, if ever before they can get their head screwed on correctly again.

Maybe it'll happen, like you say, Doohan sure did it. BUT there's a LOT of guys over the years that did not. I'd be hard pressed to come up with names, 'cause they didn't stick around long enough for them to be burned into my brain.

i totally agree bro.

better to take your time than come out of the corner swinging like he did. already burned himself out. when you're mulling around in 17th place in QP, something is definitely wrong.

He'll be back.
It's his first race back from a bad concussion and it was wet Qualifying.
Hell even J-T, who knows Donington probably better than anyone, is way down and outside the top 10.
Takes a while to get over a concussion fully; a few years back I raced at Road America a week after sustaining one on my street bike and even though I felt fine gettin on the bike I was definitley not fine by the time I got off it.

Its really hard to take an angry man seriously when hes wearing a bathrobe. - Carl Fogarty
