Stoner is up to his usual fast times.

Hopefully he keeps it going through the race.

Stoner re-opens broken bone.

Friday, 29th August 2008

Casey Stoner fastest on Friday at Misano, but victory hopes thrown into doubt after 're-opening' a broken scaphoid bone.

Despite dominating both Friday practice sessions with a flawless opening day performance at Misano, Casey Stoner's San Marino Grand Prix hopes have been thrown into doubt by a freak wrist injury.

The reigning world champion finished the day a comfortable 0.418secs ahead of world championship leader Valentino Rossi - but somehow re-opened a broken scaphoid bone, damaged back in 2003, in the process.

"The scaphoid is a really strange one because there has been no impact on it," explained a surprised Stoner. "I was just adjusting my back protector before going out for one of my runs this afternoon and I felt some pain.

"It got worse as the session went on so we decided to check it out with the Clinica Mobile and I couldn't believe it when they showed me the x-ray - it seems the bone I broke in 2003 has re-opened."

The injury will make it extremely painful and awkward for Stoner to ride on Saturday, although the Australian will undergo physio and wear a special support in order to give it his best shot.

"It's not going to be easy and I'll have to take care not to cause any further damage but my plan is to compete tomorrow," confirmed the Ducati Marlboro rider. "It's a shame because other than that everything else went really well today.

"It's nice to get off to a good start at this circuit, we went well here last year and the bike and tyres seem to be working well already. Hopefully we can continue like this tomorrow," concluded Casey, currently 50 points behind Valentino Rossi after mistakes at the last two events.

Stoner won the 2007 San Marino Grand Prix from pole position.

It seems things are going Rossi's way this year, rather then Nicky's or Stoners!

That's just freaky.
He re-opened a broken bone by adjusting his back protector?

He should prob take a few more rounds off if he needs to... Better to retreat now to fight later than make his injuries worse.

Yeah that would be ideal, but I think the problem is their contract.

PICTURE: Rossi's Misano helmet.

Saturday, 30th August 2008

Valentino Rossi unveils a special helmet design for his second home round of the season, at Misano.

This is the special helmet design with which Valentino Rossi will attempt to claim a record-equalling 68th premier-class grand prix victory, in front of his home fans in Sunday's San Marino Grand Prix.

The Misano circuit is just 15km north of the Fiat Yamaha rider's home town of Tavullia on the Adriatic coast, and the local hero is keen to delight his hordes of fans by adding another Italian win to his latest victory at Mugello earlier this year.

The new design looks like a cartoon house, presumably in reference to Misano being his 'home' race.

Rossi will be hoping the new helmet brings him some luck, having retired from the 2007 San Marino Grand Prix after just five laps following an engine problem.

The Doctor, who currently holds a 50 point lead over Casey Stoner, also has a chance of claiming Italy's 700th grand prix victory on Sunday, should an Italian rider not triumph in the 125 or 250cc races.

Whoa... all three Stoner, Rossi, and JL set their fastest time in the last 2-3 minutes, I almost though JL had the pole for a second...

Maybe not ... Stoner qualified on pole!
Looks like Lorenzo might be back in the mix again too ... so long as he doesn't hit the ejector seat button again.

I think all Rossi needs to do is finish 2nd from here on out if Stoner was to win the rest... so I think the Aussie is SOL. And you can bet Rossi will put it on the podium from here on out @ the very least.

Strager things have happened... but I'm not willing to put money against Rossi with a 50pt lead.

I think Rossi will more than try and make a point in this championship the way he is going, but now I really want to see Stoner lift his game and claw back those points. I hate one man shows
