Lightbulb MotoGP 600GP class to be 'free chassis'.

600GP class to be 'free chassis'.

Saturday, 27th September 2008

250cc replacement class to feature 'free chassis'.

A statement released by the FIM following a meeting of the grand prix commission at Motegi on Saturday provided one further clue to the format of the new 600GP class, which will replace the 250cc World Championship from 2011.

"Future of the 250cc class:

"MSMA decided unanimously to propose to the Grand Prix Commission the following as from 2011: 4-stroke, 4-cylinder maximum, 600cc maximum engines, free chassis," said the statement. "A detailed proposal will be studied by the other members of the Commission."

The fact that the new machines will be 600cc, four-stroke and with a maximum of four-cylinders was made public at June's Dutch TT.

However, the words 'free chassis' are new, and indicate that some form of standardised engine will be present throughout the field, but with no such limits on chassis design.

The engine and chassis constructors are still to be announced, although rumours suggest Honda could be involved in the engine supply.

At the same meeting, it was also decided to limit each 125cc rider to one bike from 2009.

that's gonna suck for 125's but atleast it indicates that they're not looking to shitcan that series in the immediate future.

Awesomly crap! Ditch the smallest and in many ways most tricked out bikes with an over weight piece of crap.

The limitation most be to cut costs but it will suck if you bin it hard during the weekend.

My point was it would make that bike better and more people would love to ride one if it was racing... the bike would not be what it is today...if this happened... but it won't happen anyway lol

Would I be able to enter the league with the sole purpose to get a free (better) chassis for my z1000?

The Steel over the engine type frame on it, seems its only real limitation at the moment.

there's a 20,000 euro claim rule on the engines

this will seriously encourage clapped out street engines, or an aftermarket will build up around it like it has with mod engines for sleds. But you won't see manufacturer 1 offs.

This class sounds more and more like a really stupid f**king idea, or like communism as Bartol stated at Motegi.

But KTM technical guru Harald Bartol, also a member of the MSMA, was scornful of rules that “look as though they were drawn up by Karl Marx - like Communism.

“From what I saw, they will be worse than a standard 600 engine. The street bike engines will have to be detuned. The next thing is that the 125s will be faster,” he said.

"We are in Grand Prix Racing, so why would we use a street engine? This is like a jockey riding a donkey in a horse race...."

KTM GP technical boss Harald Bartol

He is soooo right on the money with this one.

it may, I'm not sure tho, not with that claim rule in place. No major manufacturer is gonna take the engine seriously.

They may do but I doubt it with the restrictions and especially teh claimi rule. No manufacturer would like to spend the amount of money it would require if they have to sell it...

unless 600 class production bikes get a lot faster and lighter in the next couple of years.

which could definitely happen.

WSS is already putting faster lap times than 250 on some tracks like Donington and Misano.

Donny doesn't surprise me, Misano would, but don't they run opposite directions?

MotoGP/250/125 run the same direction as WSB/WSS at Misano.

I believe tracks like Mugello and Motegi, WSS would be faster too if they race on those.
