Troy Bayliss secures the 2008 World Superbike crown in his final season.
Troy Bayliss has spoken of his delight at winning three World Superbike titles aboard three different Ducatis after wrapping up the 2008 Championship at Magny-Cours.
The Aussie rider did more than enough to secure the title with three races remaining, finishing third in the first race to make the win a formality before returning to claim a 50th career victory in the second.
It means he can head to the last round of the season at the new Portimao venue with an eye on enjoying what will be his final races in the series before retiring.
For the moment though Bayliss is savouring his title victory, adding to his triumphs with the Italian marque after winning in 2001 and 2006. Furthermore, he was particularly pleased to have won those championships on three different Ducatis: the 996R, the 999F06 and now the 1098 F08.
"I'm extremely happy to have won my third world championship and to be able to say I have won on three different generations of the Ducati Superbike,” he said. “I want to thank the entire team who have worked so hard and put a lot of trust in me. Together we have done a great job this season. These last years with Ducati, since 2000, have been a great experience for me.
“This whole year has been up and down, with several riders remaining consistently fast. From half way through the season we became more confident and so there was a lot of pressure but I've done what I set out to do, I really wanted to win on the three different Ducati Superbikes.
“It's just a fantastic feeling. Now I have secured the title, I'm looking forward to enjoying the last round at the brand new track of Portimao, where I'm hoping I can finish the season on a high!"
