Seeing as how he's been a team member for 12 hours, I doubt Nicky had much if anything to do with the paintjob. Testing usually runs with black bodywork, and I'd assume Ducati did this paintjob as a welcome to Nicky.

His idea or not, I'm pretty sure he knew about it, he has the matching leathers.

Interesting times, I'm still not sure why Takahashi got the ride over some other riders.

melandri/hopkins in the top 10, capirossi 3rd...i wouldn't put much stock in these times. many are probably nursing a hangover.

Dovi faster now.
Rossi partied, slept in and then does 21 laps and is faster than most other riders.

It would have been way cooler if they had left it black.
Melandri up to Hoppers speed already.
Gibernau even with Hayden. I'd like to see Kallio after some more time in the saddle.

Although a few riders might need some time to adjust to the Bridgestone, but looks like the results will remain similar even with the single-tyre rule.

Hayden 'enjoys' Ducati debut.

Monday, 27th October 2008

Nicky Hayden makes his Ducati MotoGP debut during testing at Valencia.

Nicky Hayden made his much anticipated Ducati debut during the opening day of the post-race Valencia test, on Monday.

The American, whose entire grand prix career has been spent at Repsol Honda, now needs to adapt to a new bike, team and tyres for the 2009 season - and previously admitted the 800cc Ducati's reputation for thwarting all but Casey Stoner made him a little apprehensive.

At 11am this morning the Ducati pit garage opened its doors to reveal a special stars and stripes coloured Desmosedici for the 2006 world champion. Hayden, who finished sixth in the 2008 standings with two podiums, initially rode this year's GP8 before turning his attention to the new GP9.

Hayden improved his pace throughout the day, stopping the clock with a best lap of 1min 33.960sec. That placed the American twelfth out of the 18 riders present, 1.496sec from Stoner but within 0.6sec of his best lap on a Michelin-shod RC212V, set on his way to fifth in Sunday's grand prix.

Like most riders still under contract for another manufacturer, Hayden has to pick his words carefully and is thought to be unable to make direct comparisons between the Ducati and Honda grand prix machines at this stage.

However, Hayden did say that it had been an 'intense' first day, and that while he has 'a lot of work to do' he 'really enjoyed himself'.

"It has been a very intense day and full of many things to test and to understand, but it was exactly as I expected it to be," said Nicky. "I did just one run with the GP8 and then I switched completely to the GP9.

"Obviously there is a lot of work to do but I am happy, it was a good day that has allowed me to understand that the bike has good potential and, more than anything, I can say that I really enjoyed myself.

"This first day has given me an appreciation of the bike and the team. One of the things that really impressed me the most was the acceleration. I found myself pretty comfortable on the bike, and I really didn't make a lot of changes to levers and handlebars.

"We have not even changed a lot the settings, we have just made some small changes, some mapping settings, a couple of tyres, in order to try and understand the direction of the bike and to feel comfortable on it."

With one day of running under his belt, the amount of progress Hayden makes on the second and final day of the test could well provide a good indication of just how quickly he will adapt to the Desmosedici.

Rossi likes 2009 bike, tyres.

Monday, 27th October 2008

Valentino Rossi tries next year's bike and tyres during first day of Valencia MotoGP test - unveils new helmet design.

After a late start, new six time MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi experienced an early version of Yamaha's 2009 YZR-M1 - and the new single-tyre spec Bridgestones - during Monday's opening day of testing at Valencia.

Despite completing the least laps of any rider present, 40, the Italian was third fastest with a time of 1min 32.921secs. That time was 0.154sec quicker than his best lap in Sunday's race but 0.457sec behind Monday's pace setter - and Sunday's race winner - Casey Stoner.

Rossi began with two runs of six laps each with his 2008 M1 in order to check some settings and also get a feel for the new tyres. The Italian, sporting a special testing helmet, then made five runs and a total of 28 laps on the new prototype, setting his best time on the second run.

"Today we began work on 2009 and I was able to try the new bike for the first time. It is only the first prototype but my impression of it is very good and it seems they have done a good job," declared Rossi.

"We are working on the engine in order to have more acceleration on the exit from the corner and there is a small change, not enough yet but in the right direction so this is important. We worked on the setting and the weight distribution and I was faster with the new bike so this is good!

"We need more time to understand the bike and more laps but this is only the first day and it is very positive."

Rossi and some other riders had previously expressed concern that Bridgestone's plans to allow only 20 tyres per rider at each race weekend next season - and only two different compounds - would cause problems, but he was pleasantly surprised by the new 'one size fits all' rubber.

"The other 'big' thing today of course is the new tyres and I am really happily surprised," he admitted. "This is not the best track to try them at as we don't have so much data for here but anyway they feel very good. I was expecting less grip but we had a lot and everyone was fast today.

"The track conditions are a lot better today than they have been during the weekend so this makes a difference, but anyway we can already see that they are quite good. I think Bridgestone have done a good job but of course it will be hard to know for sure until we have been to some different tracks.

"We have to wait and see. For me they feel good even in comparison with my Bridgestone tyres from all of the season so I am happy so far.

"I have a special 'world champion' helmet now which I like a lot and which I will use throughout the winter testing. As for the number one... I will keep my 46 of course but I will put the number one on my back as I did in the past," he revealed.

Rossi's Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was seventh fastest in a time of 1min 33.550sec after his first day with Bridgestone tyres.

Dovizioso: A really exciting day.

Monday, 27th October 2008

Andrea Dovizioso makes Repsol Honda debut at Valencia MotoGP test.

2009 Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso was the fastest of the new signings during the opening day of the Valencia MotoGP test.

Less than 24 hours after securing fifth in his rookie premier-class season, for the satellite JiR Team Scot Honda outfit, Dovi got his first taste of life as a factory rider.

Both Dovizioso and team-mate Dani Pedrosa rode 2008 RC212V machines fitted with new single-tyre spec Bridgestones. Dovizioso's bikes also featured revised handlebar/footrest positions to suit his stature.

The Italian, also making his pneumatic-valve debut, set the eighth fastest lap time of the 18 riders present, 1.2sec from Casey Stoner and one second behind Pedrosa.

"It's been a really exciting day," smiled Dovi. "The bike feels good, it feels like an evolution of my 2008 bike, like a step forward, which is what I expected, so I'm happy. Compared to my 08 bike, the factory bike has many positive points, in particular the engine is both smoother and more powerful. Right from the start the stability at the front was very good.

"With the electronics, I need more time to learn and understand them, especially traction control as there are so many settings. I also tried Bridgestone tyres for the first time today, they seem fine, but I need to slightly adapt my riding style to get the best from them," he revealed. "All in all it was a positive first day but I still have a lot to learn. With my new team we start working step by step and I like this system."

The next fastest rider to change teams was Marco Melandri, who set the tenth fastest time on his Kawasaki debut.

Pedrosa meanwhile focused on evaluating a new engine/exhaust spec with improved smoothness and rideability. The Spaniard, second in Sunday's season-ending grand prix, was again second to Stoner during day one of testing.

"Today we had perfect conditions for testing, it was sunny and the asphalt had good grip after yesterday's race," stated Dani. "We tested some new engine specs in order to improve the character of the engine and then we focused on testing the new tyres.

"At the beginning the feeling was not so good but working with the mechanics, we made some changes and the feeling improved considerably. It's clear that next year the rider and the bike will need to adapt to the tyres.

"Today the track conditions were perfect so we had no problems with the limited number of tyres, we will need to check how this tyre system works with indifferent conditions," he warned, referring to the drastically reduced tyre options now available.

Testing continues at Valencia on Tuesday.
