MotoGP back on British Eurosport!

It has been announced that British Eurosport will continue to broadcast MotoGP in 2009, but will not show live coverage of the MotoGP race.

Intended to compliment the BBC's service, British Eurosport has secured the rights to show live coverage of all practice and qualifying sessions, as well as both the 125cc and 250cc races. In addition, BBC viewers can watch MotoGP, 250cc and 125cc qualification, as well as 125cc and 250cc races, live on their 'red button' service.

The MotoGP race, however, will be shown live by the BBC only, with British Eurosport televising it on a same-day delay.

"We are delighted to be offering more than ever of the world's leading motorcycle series,” said Philip Bernie, BBC, Head of TV Sport Editorial. “Our coverage of MotoGP, the 250s and 125s means that BBC viewers will be able to get the most comprehensive view of this spectacular sport. Combined with our new F1 contract, this means the BBC is now showcasing fully the best motor sport on both two wheels and four wheels.

“In order to complement the BBC's coverage, British Eurosport will also broadcast MotoGP extensively this year. The UK arm of Europe's popular digital sports network will air all practice and qualifying sessions live from the Friday and Saturday of each Grand Prix weekend, followed by live coverage of the 125cc and 250cc races on Sundays. The MotoGP races will also be available on the channel on a same-day-delayed basis.

“Furthermore, the British Eurosport transmissions will be available as video on demand for seven days via the Eurosport Player at the Eurosport.yahoo.co.uk website."

The announcement comes eight months after MotoGP commercial rights-holder Dorna Sports revealed it would switch the coverage from Eurosport to the BBC, stating:

"Coverage of the MotoGP World Championships will no longer be available on Eurosport from the 2009 season," due to “Dorna's new strategy of working with national network broadcasters around Europe, always focusing first and foremost on free-to-air coverage to bring MotoGP to wider audiences. This means that in the UK, the BBC will enjoy exclusive coverage of MotoGP next year...”

The announcement was met with anger and disappointment by a substantial number of fans, many of whom feared the loss of extensive live coverage and the popular British Eurosport commentary team of Toby Moody, Julian Ryder and Randy Mamola.

Whilst the BBC assured viewers that it will show all MotoGP races live in 2009 and would be increasing its coverage - albeit using the 'red button' and with its previous commentary team - comments left in the Crash.net forum and elsewhere on the internet indicated that many loyal MotoGP fans remained deeply unsatisfied.

Meanwhile, for fans of Moody, Ryder and Mamola, presenters and commentators are yet to be confirmed.

The 2009 MotoGP season starts at Qatar on April 12

I'd be hapy to send Moody down to the grid and have Mike Scott take his place in the box if you're so opposed to Mamola. I actually don't mind Mamola at all tho, he's a great ambassador to the sport and the riders take him seriously.

The only problem with Mamola is he gets to exited and seems to make mistakes while on the air.

Otherwise his is a guy.

ya, he's very excitable, no doubt there.

That's part of why I like the Eurosport crew tho, they dont' feel like they need to be talking 100% of the time. I liked that CBS race that Schwantz did too, guy knew how to shut up and just let it happen, but people tore him apart for it. Kinda depends on the personality of the viewer I think.

Eurosport confirms Moody, Ryder - no Mamola

Following Thursday's announcement that British Eurosport will continue to broadcast MotoGP in 2009, it has now been confirmed that two of the three members of its popular commentary team will also 'return'.

Dorna announced last year that, as part of its new strategy, the BBC would be the only place for British viewers to watch MotoGP in 2009. That prompted an angry reaction from many fans, worried at missing out on live practice and qualifying - as well as the popular commentary line-up of Toby Moody, Julian Ryder and Randy Mamola.

In what appears to have been a victory for people power, Thursday's announcement by Dorna stated that British Eurosport would now 'compliment' the expanding BBC coverage by broadcasting all grand prix weekend action live - except the MotoGP race, which will be shown live on the BBC and later in the day on British Eurosport.

"It's really the best news possible that we'll have this fantastic series back on British Eurosport after all and we owe a massive thanks to all the fans who championed our coverage," said Dave Kerr, director of British Eurosport.

A Eurosport statement released on Friday morning added that “Toby Moody and Julian Ryder will still commentate” but that “Randy Mamola will sadly not be part of the presentation team, due to the reduced on-site presence for the majority of rounds”.

Mamola, a 13 time 500cc race winner, had provided expert insight whilst operating as a pit lane reporter, but with Eurosport now covering the majority of 2009 events remotely such a trackside role appears to no longer exist.

Nevertheless, Eurosport believes that it can continue to offer fans the coverage they desire and is looking forward to the season ahead.

“Toby and Julian are back and I hope many of those fans [who wanted MotoGP to stay on Eurosport] will return to enjoy our presentation,” said Kerr. “MotoGP will remain a massive priority in our schedules and our viewers will still be able to see every minute of every race weekend on British Eurosport.”

Biga I am SOOOO with you on that one.
Mamola can't string together an intelligible sentence for love nor money. Highly knowledgeable but garbles sentences and invents new words whenever he feels like it.

They'd be better of it without him i.m.o

Oh, just read the whole thread; guess they will be without him ... excellent.

Yeah, my wife always knew when he was doing a pit lane report 'cos I'd be telling the T.V to 'Shut the f*ck up'
