What's with the 'Dangle'?

I've seen this dangling leg thing progressing over the past year or two. Last year it wasn't quite so pronounced - the riders just seemed to be lifting their feet off the pegs to reposition them or something but this year it's bordering on ridiculous. It looks like they're about to go round corners supermoto style with their feet on the deck. What gives? What's it all about?

It's supposed the scare the spaniards into thinking they'll be run off the track if there is enough room for the banzai late brake dive...

What? it was a good guess no?

MYguess

It looks like something done on a mx bike . it helps plant the front end or in this case add traction or weight to the front end.
probably more psychological boost IMO

ya I'm firmly in the "it's all in their head" camp.

Kevin and Wayne and Mick used to do it when they were in reeeaaaallly deep, but I think that's more 'cause they weren't thinking about it and the old flattrack reflex came back out. They're clearly doing it deliberatly now.

The only reason I can think of to do it is getting some extra weight out there will need some steering action to keep the bike from tipping in, which will give you more room for countersteering.

but if that's the case, they're hanging the leg off the wrong side.

HAIL TO THE KING!!

I thought they were doing it to change their C of G. Bike still at the same angle but a little more planted regardless of the bikes angle, but WTF do I know

It's fricken weird is all I know - you don't see Lorenzo doing it and he's as quick around a track as anyone out there. I know when I've got too hot into a corner my leg sometimes comes out - it's like a reaction so as you're ready to push the bike back up if things go pear shaped.

I thought I heard the commentators say in one of the last races that it has to do with helping put the weight out there so the bike turns in quicker?

Well I tried it at the home... and I did step into the kitchen a bit quicker. Shaved off a whole 5secs off diner time. So I came on here and posted with the extra time.

racerraul, just don't stick a leg out of bed when the missus wants it kept in. I don't think she'll appreciate you shaving off 5 seconds there

I read somewhere that they do it for a couple reasons, they put there legs out to throw the guy off that is tight behind them, hence sending them out on a wider line and not letting them on the inside. And the other reason was to break the Gyroscope effect faster and less effort. If you pay attention Casey will only do it on left turns and Yourgay will do it if he is dueling it out with someone and Rossi also.

Sounded good to me so I will go with that

Interesting - so it's like wearing his lucky t-shirt or picking the leathers out of his ass while on the grid, and everybody else is doing it 'cos - well - Rossi does it...
