SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2005
Dane Tom Kristensen took an historic seventh win, his sixth in a row, in an epic battle played out between the Champion Audi R8 and the French favourite Pescarolo in the 73rd running of the 24 Heures du Mans.
Kristensen's car, shared with JJ Lehto and Marco Werner, worked itself into an early lead after the threat from the faster Pescarolo cars was put back by technical problems.
The lead #3 Audi performed faultlessly but there was a very strong threat from the #16 Pescarolo which could lap some five seconds faster according to the respective car's fastest laps.
The Pescarolo was closing in the final couple of hours, but a pitstop to clear the radiators in the searing heat meant the final lap battle was not to be.
Elsewhere GT1 saw an epic battle between the Corvettes and the Astons, with the Prodrive Astons suffering problems in the final hours, putting one out and elminating the threat of the other from the victorious 'vettes.
LM2 was a superb battle which saw the MG liviered RML Lola take what might be the Birmingham marque's last ever international race win.
GT2 saw a win from the #71 Alex Job Racing Porsche, a fine tenth in the overall standings with some twenty-seven cars classified as finishing from the forty-nine starters.
